When an inmate is sexually assaulted, whatever the circumstances, it is a crime
and a human rights violation. Sexual abuse is not an inevitable fact of prison life.
On the contrary, it is the direct result of inadequate laws, poor corrections policies,
and flawed practices.
Just Detention International seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention,
in the U.S. and beyond. JDI works toward three broad goals: to hold government officials
accountable for prisoner rape; to transform negative public attitudes about inmates
and their right to be free from sexual violence; and to ensure that survivors of
sexual abuse in detention have access to the services they need.
