Paying Tribute to You

Read JDI's new Action Update:We are pleased to share with you our latest Action Update. In this issue, we pay tribute to you, JDI's supporters, for the compassion you showed prisoner rape survivors over the holidays. Your outpouring of messages – more than 11,000, an unprecedented total – gave some much-needed hope to people still behind bars.

While we've had many recent successes in the fight to end prisoner rape, last month the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) gave us a grim reminder of how far we still have to go. In a shocking decision, NSA named Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca as its “Sheriff of the Year.”  Sheriff Baca’s jails are rife with physical and sexual abuse, and some of the most horrific attacks were committed by his staff. A citizen’s group has blamed Baca directly, citing “a failure of leadership.”

JDI Survivor Council member Frank Mendoza, who was raped by one of Sheriff Baca’s Deputy Sheriffs, has launched a petition asking NSA to rescind this award. We hope you’ll join Frank and JDI in demanding that NSA do the right thing.
