Latest News About What You Can Do to Stop Prisoner Rape
I am pleased to share with you JDI's newest Action Update. In this issue you can learn the latest on the national standards addressing prisoner rape -- standards that are mandated by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) of 2003, and that have been in development for years. Finally, the U.S. Department of Justice has released its draft of the standards, and is holding a public comment period that runs through April 4, 2011. This is our last chance to weigh in on the standards and to demand that they are strong enough to live up to their potential.
Every day without the standards, according to the Department's own research, another 600 adults and children are sexually abused behind bars -- 216,600 per year. It is time to end this nationwide crisis, once and for all.
I hope that you will be inspired to take action and submit your comments to the Department of Justice today. Together, we can make a difference by standing up for the safety and dignity of all people.
