You Did It!
Thanks to your incredible generosity, we reached our year-end goal of raising $216,600 -- $1 for every person who is sexually abused each year in U.S. prisons, jails, and youth detention facilities, according to the Department of Justice.
We asked some survivors of sexual abuse who are still behind bars to share what they'd like to say to JDI's supporters. Here is what we heard:
"Thank you so much. You could not have chosen a more needed cause. Sexual abuse is a big problem everywhere, but in prison we are not protected the way we should be. Most of us are too afraid to fight, but with JDI we can be courageous. I know I can."
- Beverly, a 55-year-old mom who was sexually assaulted repeatedly by a corrections officer.
"You're doing a great thing. People like me, who really have no one, need JDI."
- Ivory, a father and former truck driver
who was sexually abused by a prison official and then beaten by gang members after reporting the abuse.
"Thank you for donating to JDI, the best organization that's fighting sexual abuse behind bars. Know that, with your continued support, one day sexual abuse behind bars will no longer happen."
- Dwight, who has been raped repeatedly by other inmates in a
Texas prison.
We know that the new year will hold challenges in the fight against prisoner rape. Your support will help us meet those challenges by educating inmates about their right to be free from sexual abuse, teaching corrections officials how to protect the basic human rights of the people in their care, and continuing to provide hope to people like Beverly, Dwight, and Ivory.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Lovisa Stannow
