Thank you for supporting JDI’s campaign to stop the sexual abuse of immigrant kids in Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) custody. Nearly one thousand people signed our petition to HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell, urging her to finalize Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards to ensure these kids’ safety.

Every day, scores of children are crossing the U.S. border alone. They are far from home, scared, and unbelievably vulnerable — many having fled abuse in their home countries. HHS has a duty to protect the kids in its care from sexual violence — sadly, the department is failing at this basic task.

JDI submitted the petition to Secretary Burwell on August 20, 2014, and we will continue to provide our supporters with updates on this campaign.

Update: read the HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathwes Burwell, signed by JDI and more than 80 allies.
