Tell your Rep to finish the job!
Your calls and emails worked! Thanks so much to all of you who asked your Senators to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Your efforts paid off yesterday, when the Senate approved VAWA reauthorization with a vote of 68 to 31.
The VAWA bill includes a provision clarifying that the Prison Rape Elimination Act applies to immigration detention centers. JDI and its allies have worked for more than a year with Senators Patrick Leahy and Dick Durbin to get this clarification. Now, the U.S. is one step closer to protecting the hundreds of thousands of adults and children held in these facilities from the devastation of sexual abuse.
The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to take up VAWA reauthorization in the coming weeks. Please urge your Representative to support VAWA and to be sure that detainees in immigration facilities are protected from sexual abuse.
Please take three minutes, right now, to send an email to your Representative!
|Step 1: Find your Representative’s contact information here: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml.

Step 2: Fill in your name, mailing address, and email address.
Step 3: Write your own message, or copy and paste JDI’s sample text:
I agree with Just Detention International! We need to renew the Violence Against Women Act immediately. We also need to end sexual abuse in immigration detention facilities by including a provision in VAWA that clarifies the Prison Rape Elimination Act. Please support VAWA reauthorization with this provision today!
Thanks so much for all that you do!
