Today: Take Action for Criminal Justice Reform
Sexual violence in detention does not happen in isolation. In facilities where such abuse is widespread, violence of every kind tends to flourish. As part of its effort to end prisoner rape, JDI supports passage of Senate Bill 714, the National Criminal Justice Commission Act. The Act would create a bipartisan commission to review current criminal justice policies and make recommendations for system-wide reform.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill in early 2010 and the full House of Representatives passed similar legislation in August. Now, JDI needs your help to ensure that Senate Bill 714 passes the entire Senate and goes to the President for his signature.
Today, September 15, is a national call-in day in support of this important legislation. Please join JDI and advocates around the country in contacting your Senators and urging them to vote for Senate Bill 714, the National Criminal Justice Commission Act. Please call both your Senators by dialing the Capitol Switchboard and asking to be transferred to your Senators' offices. The switchboard phone number is (202) 224-3121. It's best to keep your message short, but feel free to mention that rampant sexual abuse behind bars is one of the symptoms of our broken criminal justice system.
Thank you for your commitment to ensuring the right of everyone to be free from sexual abuse, regardless of custody status.
