Conservatives, Liberals Call on Attorney General to Enact Prisoner Rape Standards
Earlier this week, advocates from across the political spectrum came together in urging Attorney General Eric Holder to enact national standards addressing sexual abuse in detention. Just Detention International joined Prison Fellowship Ministries, the ACLU National Prison Project, American Conservative Union, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, Focus on the Family, the General Board of Church and Society of the United Methodist Church, and the Open Society Policy Center for a press conference publicizing a letter to Holder that was signed by 35 organizations supporting the standards. Prisoner rape survivor Marilyn Shirley also spoke at the press conference, which was covered by the Dallas Morning News, Huffington Post, Christian Post, Associated Press, and several other media outlets.
While the organizations that signed the letter to Holder often are at odds, they have found common ground in working to end prisoner rape. These advocates and faith-based leaders recognize that sexual abuse in detention is an issue of basic human dignity.
